CHOOSING A BREEDER
Choosing a breeder is a big decision that should not be taken lightly. When choosing whom to purchase a kitten from, the first thing you need to remember is that there are LOTS of Persian kittens available all over the world at any given moment. With that in mind, there is no reason to rush into the decision of buying your kitten. If the kitten you are interested in becomes unavailable during the time you are taking to make your decision, you can rest assured, hundreds of other kittens are still available. In knowing that there are so many kittens available, you can make a well informed, thought out decision.
When looking for a Persian kitten, your number one concern should be to find a healthy kitten. Ask the breeder lots of questions. Make sure the breeder tests for Feline Leukemia/FIV and PKD (polycystic kidney disease). PKD is said to be in 40% of the untested Persian population. This hereditary disease will cause your beloved pet to get sick and die and is 100% preventable simply by your breeder PKD testing all of their cats before choosing to breed them. The number one reason I have a new family come to me for a new Persian kitten is because they lost their prior Persian to this horrible disease. Does the breeder stay in touch with the families that bring their kittens home so that if there is a ever a health problem that could be hereditary that arises, the breeder is made aware so they can determine where this gene was inherited from? Does the breeder give a health guarantee on the kittens? Do they stand behind their health guarantee? How long have they been breeding and how knowledgeable are they about the breed. Do they offer education and informative information about the breed?
Take into consideration the breeder's reputation. The best way to find out if a breeder is honest and raises healthy kittens that make their new families happy is by researching through social media. This allows you to connect with others who have babies from that breeder without the breeder having any say in it. You can check their Instagram and Facebook accounts, this will allow you to find others who have kittens from that breeder. I have approximately 200k followers on Instagram, 320k followers on TikTok & 20K followers on Facebook. I have many happy families available on social media to give reference. My Instagram and Facebook is @christypawpersians, I post almost everyday so you can find out TONS about my babies and the people who own them:-)
Another extremely important consideration you should take into account when choosing your kitten is personality. Personality is the result of a combination of two factors. Genetics play half of the role in temperament. A cat that is the offspring of a bad temperament is much more likely to be shy than a kitten that is the offspring of an outgoing cat. Knowing that, it is important to find out the temperament of the parents of your kitten. In many cases, someone breeding for a certain trait, may overlook a bad personality because they love the way the cat looks. So that breeder chooses to breed the cat, despite it's undesirable temperament, and the gene is then passed onto the offspring. The second half of the equation is socialization. Kittens need to be handled everyday and need socialization in order to be able to be a loving part of a family.
For me, looks are also very important. Find a breeder that has beautiful cats, not just beautiful kittens. All kittens are cute, they do not all grow up to be beautiful. Do your research if you are wanting a Persian cat that is visually pleasing as well as sweet and loving.
Choosing a kitten is a fun and exciting experience. Just make sure to be cautious and follow your instincts. If it doesn't feel right or something inside is holding you back, then do not commit to buying a kitten from that particular breeder. Your cat is going to be with you for the next 15 to 20 years, so choosing the right breeder is something you are going to live with for a long time.
