CHOOSING A BREEDER
Choosing a breeder is a big decision that should not be taken lightly. When choosing whom to purchase a kitten from, the first thing you need to remember is that there are LOTS of persian kittens available all over the world at any given moment. With that in mind, there is no reason to rush into the decision of buying your kitten. If the kitten you are interested in becomes unavailable during the time you are taking to make your decision, you can rest assured, hundreds of other kittens are still available. In knowing that there are so many kittens available, you can make a well informed, thought out decision.
When looking for a persian kitten, your number one concern should be to find a healthy kitten. Ask the breeder lots of questions. Make sure the breeder tests for feline luekemia and PKD (polycistic kidney disease). PKD is said to be in 20 to 40% of the untested persian population. This hereditary disease will cause your beloved pet to get sick and die and is 100% preventable simlpy by your breeder PKD testing all of their cats before chossing to breed them. The number one reason I have a new family come to me for a new persian kitten is because they lost their prior persian to this horribe disease. It would also be expected that the kitten is free of internal parasites such as round worms, whip worms, hook worms, and tapeworms, as well external parasites such as fleas and ear mites. While external parasites are fairly easy to get rid of, one would wonder why a professional, loving breeder would allow their pet to live with such a nusiance.
Another extremely important consideration you should take into account when choosing your kitten is personality. Personality is the result of a combination of two factors. Genetics plays half of the role in temperament. A cat that is the offspring of a bad temperament is much more likely to be shy than a kitten that is the offspring of an outgoing cat. Knowing that, it is important to find out the temperament of the parents of your kitten. In many cases, someone breeding for a certain trait, may overlook a bad personality because they love the way the cat looks. So that breeder chooses to breed the cat, despite it's undesirable temperament, and the gene is then passed onto the offspring. The second half of the equation is socialization. It is my opinion that socialization is even more important than genetics. If a kitten is not handled often and exposed to loud noise and the sounds of a regular home (the vacuum, dishwasher, washing machine, blowdryer, television, toilet flushing, and in some homes, LOTS of children) then when you bring your 10 to 12 week old kitten home, it will be in for a MAJOR shock. Early exposure to home life is vital to the personality of your kitten. I believe kittens should be handled and cuddled daily to enhance the bond they make with humans. A kitten raised in a cage or a cattery where they own several adult cats, simply is not going to have a sufficient amount of socialization. If a cattery owns 20 females, simple math tells you, that they will have 20 to 40 litters per year. With an average of 2 to 5 kittens per litter, that makes 80 to 200 or more kittens per year. It is impossible to properly love and socialize that many kittens. So I would urge you to consider buying a kitten from someone who raises their kittens in their home and doesn't produce more kittens than they can properly socialize. Many unsocialized persians will simply spend their days hiding under furniture or a bed, which is not the way anyone wants their pet to behave.
For me, looks is also very important. Of course I care about how my cat looks, or I would not have choosen to breed persians, the most beautiful cat in the world. Once your health and personality criteria are met, then comes the fun part! Silver persians are known for their extreme beauty, with emerald green eyes, dark black eyeliner, and long flowing coats. Now keep in mind, every kitten is cute. But as an adult, the best indicator of what your kitten will look like full grown, is the parents. Just like people, kittens often strongly resemble their parents. So what you see is what you get. If you like the looks of the parents, then it is safe to assume you will like the looks of the kitten when it is full grown. If you don't care for the parents, and you really want your kitten to look a certain way, then it would be best to pass on that particular kitten. There are many breeders that will tell you anything you want to hear in order to sell you a kitten, so be selective. And remember, there will inevitably be another kitten available.
Choosing a kitten is a fun and exciting experience. Just make sure to be cautious and follow your instincts. If it doesn't feel right or something inside is holding you back, then do not commit to buying a kitten from that particular breeder. If a breeder is pressuring you into getting the kitten, I would run in the other direction. A breeder should respect your right to take your time and be positive of your decision. Your cat is going to be with you for 15 to 20 years, so choosing the right breeder is something you are going to live with for a long time.
