I try to make post periodically to inform/remind kitty owners of certain things I have learned along the way. Today I want to talk about urinary blockages. A urinary blockage can occur in any breed of cat (purebred or mixed breed) and is life threatening. Signs of a urinary blockage are nearly constant straining and or sitting in the litter box and producing minimal output. There will often be multiple tiny marble sized (or smaller) clumped urine balls rather than the normal size. If you notice your cat suddenly sitting in the litter box, seemingly nonstop, and having minimal urine output, this is a life-threatening emergency! You MUST take your cat to the vet immediately so that they can clear the blockage! A cat can die from this in 48 hours. I have identified a treat that is often the culprit. There is a particular dry cat treat brand, 'Temptations Cat Treats.' DO NOT GIVE THEM TO YOUR CATS!!!!! It doesn’t matter what breed of cat you own, these treats have a high ash content and can cause a male kitty to get a blocked urethra and a female kitty to get a UTI. When I see people posting about their kitty being blocked on Facebook cat health groups, I OFTEN see the kitties were given 'Temptations Cat Treats.' Is this the only thing that can cause a urinary blockage or UTI? No. Is there a common thread of me seeing this time after time, absolutely yes! Do not say you were not warned, I would never give 'Temptations Cat Treats' treats to my cats. I highly recommend Churu or something similar for treats. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
